Good morning! ;-) Four years ago, I shared a post about my morning routine here on the blog – and I figured it was time for an update!

How I start my day determines how the rest of the day will go: if I wake up in a bad mood, the negativity will hang over the entire day – but fortunately, the opposite is also true! Below ten tips for starting your day off right:

Wake up relaxed

It’s not always easy for me to get out of bed in the morning, especially in winter, when it doesn’t get light here in Hamburg until 8:00 a.m. or later. For the past few years, I’ve been using a daylight alarm clock – the Wake Up Light by Philips* – that uses sound as well as light to simulate sunrise and stimulate the production of cortisol, which helps you wake up. I set mine to the sounds of birds chirping and I absolutely love it. One of the best investments ever!

Make your bed

Making your bed in the morning takes only about half a minute – but it makes a massive difference. One study found that over 70% of people who make their bed in the morning are happier than people who do not. On average, bed-makers are more productive, like their jobs more, feel better rested, and exercise more often than those who leave their bed a mess before heading out.

Meditation, yoga, and fitness

I begin each day with a short meditation (5–15 minutes) and then practice a bit of yoga (often just a few sun salutations) or go to the gym to train (which changes the course of my morning routine a bit more). Meditation helps me focus, while training and movement give me strength for the day.

Dry brushing, oil pulling, and hot/cold showers

Before I jump in the shower, I use a dry brush* and “brush” my legs from bottom to top. It only takes a few minutes, but the effect is powerful and immediate – I feel much more energized afterwards!

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic purification technique that I’ve covered in detail here. Pulling oil while showering is a great way to kill two birds with one stone.

Hot/cold showers also fortify the immune system and gives you a vigorous start to the day.

Drink water (with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar)

Your body is dehydrated when you first wake up – so drink a big glass of water! Lemon water helps bring the PH of your body back into balance. Fresh lemon juice is also rich in antioxidants, potassium, calcium, and magnesium and is a natural anti-aging food. It also strengthens the immune system and improves digestion. Sometimes I’ll also add apple cider vinegar (ACV) – you can read more about it here.

Have a healthy breakfast

Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day – I really feel it on days when I’ve skipped breakfast, for example, and I’ll notice that I’m not as productive as I usually am. There’s tons of easy breakfast recipes here on the blog, and options like Overnight Oats are easy to make the night before.

Back in January I wrote about adaptogens, which I’ve been integrating into my breakfast repertoire for a while now. Check out the recipe for my Glowing Skin Smoothie here.

Moisturizing mask

One of my favorite parts of my morning ritual is using a moisturizing mask, which I usually apply before my first coffee. My favorite mask is the Hyaluron + Bloom Pink Clay Mask from Lovely Day: it’s super moisturizing and has been my absolute favorite for several months now!

Don’t worry – you don’t have to completely overhaul your routine right away! I know it’s a big time commitment, so add in what feels best, and perhaps try new things with time. I usually take around two-and-a-half hours for my morning routine, and I don’t do every single thing every day. Just do what you can – and above all, don’t stress!
