Ever add kale to a smoothie? Kale season is about to begin and I’m looking forward to incorporating fresh kale into my meals again this winter! At the moment, however, I’m only having kale in smoothies in the form of dried and powdered kale. It’s not only nourishing, but it tastes amazing, too!

The smoothie below is made with kale, apple, tangerine, grapes, and water. My days are super busy at the moment, and this is an easy way to get more greens into my diet – especially because I tend to eat worse when I’m stressed (like so many of us!).

Grünkohl im Grünen Smoothie

Some time ago I was on the phone with a friend who’s also a health scientist, and we both happened to be making dinner at that exact moment: she was making frozen pizza, while I was cooking something “healthy.” She asked me if I cook healthy food every day, because she often doesn’t have time.

I could feel her shame oozing through the phone – but I had to reassure her, of course! I also order pizza sometimes. Yesterday, for example. After 12 hours of work, I have no desire to cook, and in these instances, eating convenience food can be an act of self-care. But the important thing is that the frozen pizza days remain exceptions and don’t become habits.

I should reiterate that I also allow myself other exceptions, because as long as my diet is largely healthy, flexibility and variety are super important!

On a lot of health blogs, I get that impression that the authors would never go near a slice of conventional cake – and that’s not what I’m trying to do here. Primarily, I’m trying to make sure that I’m getting in enough fruits and vegetables, and that includes drinking them in the form of green smoothies – which is especially useful on a given day when I’m otherwise making any sort of exception. Read more about green smoothies here.

What kinds of exceptions do you make? What’s your favorite Green Smoothie ingredient? Ever tossed kale into the blender?
